Water heater replacement and water damage restoration are two separate costs — insurance covers the damage, not the unit. See complete cost breakdowns for every heater type.
| Type | Cost Range |
|---|---|
| Gas tank water heater (40–50 gallon) | $900–$1,800 |
| Electric tank water heater (40–50 gallon) | $800–$1,600 |
| Gas tankless (on-demand) water heater | $2,000–$4,500 |
| Electric tankless water heater | $1,500–$3,500 |
| Heat pump (hybrid) water heater | $1,200–$2,800 |
| Water damage restoration after water heater failure | $1,200–$6,000 |
Tank vs. tankless is the largest price variable. Within each category, capacity (40 vs. 80 gallon tank; 6 vs. 11 GPM tankless) affects both unit and installation cost.
Switching from gas to electric or vice versa requires new connections — electrical panel upgrade ($500–$2,000) or gas line extension ($500–$1,500). Keeping the same fuel type keeps costs lower.
Power vent and direct vent units can be installed in more locations but cost $200–$500 more to install. Atmospheric vent units are cheaper but require specific venting conditions.
A failed water heater that leaks or floods adds $1,200–$6,000 in restoration costs. This is a separate expense from the replacement — and often the larger of the two.
