Yes. A stain means water has already saturated your ceiling material and insulation above it. Even if the leak stopped, trapped moisture enables mold growth for weeks. Have a restoration professional inspect with moisture meters — the source may be an intermittent leak (e.g., roof leak only during rain, AC drip pan that overflows monthly).
Do I need to open my ceiling to dry it?
Usually yes. Industrial air movers and dehumidifiers can dry exposed surfaces, but trapped moisture inside ceiling cavities (above drywall, in insulation) requires either drill holes for air injection drying or controlled demolition and replacement.
