Sump Pump Maintenance Checklist

Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit — the pump should activate, discharge water, and shut off. Clean the pit of debris annually. Check the discharge line for clogs and ensure it drains away from the foundation.

Install a battery backup pump ($150–$400) for power outages during storms — when sump pumps are needed most. Consider a high-water alarm that alerts your phone.

Sump pump failure is a leading basement flooding cause. Standard homeowners insurance often excludes sump pump overflow without a water backup endorsement.
