Sump Pump Repair

Quick answer

Most sump pump failures are a stuck or tangled float switch, a jammed impeller, a failed check valve or a burned-out motor. Fixr puts typical repairs at $150–$500, about $300 on average, and replacing the pump costs more. If water is rising in the pit, call (888) 217-6781 to reach a plumbing company taking calls in your ZIP.

Signs you need a plumber

  • The pump does not turn on when water rises in the pit
  • It runs constantly, or cycles on and off every few seconds
  • It hums but no water leaves the discharge pipe
  • Loud grinding or rattling while it runs
  • Water flowing back into the pit after the pump shuts off

If the pit is close to overflowing and the pump will not run, unplug it before you touch anything in the water, and call. A wet-dry vacuum can buy time while you wait.

What to check before you call

  1. Check that it is plugged in and the GFCI outlet has not tripped
  2. Lift the float gently: the pump should start. If it does not, the switch or motor has failed
  3. Look for a float caught on the pit wall or the power cord
  4. Make sure the discharge line outside is not frozen or buried

What the plumber does

  1. 1

    Tests the pump

Fills the pit and checks the float switch, motor and impeller under load.

  2. 2

    Replaces the part

Swaps the float switch, the check valve or a section of discharge pipe.

  3. 3

    Or replaces the pump

Installs a new pump sized to the pit and inflow, and can add a battery backup.

Sump pump repair: common questions

How long do sump pumps last?

Many last around 7 to 10 years, depending on how often they run. A pump that is near that age and has failed once is usually worth replacing rather than repairing.

Why does my sump pump run all the time?

A stuck float switch, a failed check valve letting water fall back into the pit, or a pump too small for the inflow. A high water table after heavy rain can also keep it running.

Is a battery backup worth it?

Pumps most often fail during storms, which is also when power goes out. A battery backup keeps the pit pumping through an outage.
