Water or Condensation in the Dryer Drum: Vent, Flap or Duct

3 min readUpdated 2026-11-04

Quick answer

Water inside a vented dryer almost always comes from the duct, not the dryer. Hot, moist air cools in a long, uninsulated or sagging duct, condenses, and runs back into the drum; it is worse in cold weather and with a clogged vent. Rain can also enter through an outside flap that sticks open. Shorten and straighten the duct, insulate runs through cold spaces, clean out lint, and make sure the outside flap closes. On condenser or heat pump dryers, check the water tank and drain hose. Call (888) 217-0236 to reach an appliance repair company taking calls in your ZIP; the line is answered 24/7.

Follow the short menu, then your 5-digit ZIP. The line goes quiet for a few seconds while it connects; stay on. If it does not connect, call once more: companies taking calls change minute to minute.

Finding water or droplets in the dryer drum is surprising, because a dryer does not use water. On a vented dryer, the water is almost always moisture from your clothes that condensed in the vent duct and ran back in.

Where It Comes From

What you findLikely cause
Water in the drum after cold nightsCondensation in a cold or uninsulated duct
Water at the back of the drumSagging duct with a low spot
Water after rainOutside flap stuck open, or a missing hood
Damp lint in the ductClogged vent; air moves too slowly
Puddle under a ventless dryerFull tank or a loose drain hose

Fix It

  1. 1Check the outside flap. It should open when the dryer runs and close when it stops. Clear lint and nests, or replace a broken hood.
  2. 2Clean the duct. Lint holds moisture and slows airflow. See signs of a clogged dryer vent.
  3. 3Remove sags. Use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct and support it so it slopes slightly down toward the outside.
  4. 4Shorten the run and cut bends where you can.
  5. 5Insulate the duct where it passes through a cold attic, garage or crawl space.

Ventless Dryers

Condenser and heat pump dryers collect water in a tank or drain it through a hose. If water appears, empty the tank, check the hose, and clean the condenser per the manual.

What a Repair Costs

Angi puts typical dryer repairs at $100–$430. See dryer repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there water in my dryer?

Usually condensation from the vent duct: moist air cools in a long, cold or sagging duct and runs back into the drum. A stuck outside flap can also let rain in.

Is condensation in a dryer vent normal?

A little, in cold weather, can happen. Water dripping into the drum means the duct is too long, too cold, sagging or clogged.

Can water in the dryer damage it?

It can rust the drum and parts and leave clothes damp. Lint mixed with water also blocks the vent faster.
