Sump Pump Cost: Installation, Replacement & Sewage Ejector Pumps
Sump pump installation averages $1,400 ($800–$2,500). Replacement in an existing pit runs $350–$1,000. Sewage ejector pumps, battery backups, crawl space installs, permits, and why insurance does not cover any of it.
Installation and replacement are different jobs at very different prices, and most quotes are one or the other. A new install means digging or cutting a pit, running discharge line and often new electrical. A replacement drops a new pump into a pit that already exists. Everything below keeps them separate.

Installation vs Replacement — Why the Gap Is So Large
A new installation is mostly not the pump. It is the pit, the discharge line and the electrical:

A replacement skips nearly all of that. The installer pulls the old pump and fits a new one — no digging, no slab, usually no electrical. That is the entire reason it lands at $350–$1,000 against $800–$2,500.
Before replacing, check whether the pump is actually dead. A float switch is $35–$70 in parts and a check valve $15–$30, and a stuck float is the most common reason a working pump stops running.
On labour hours the published sources genuinely disagree — Bob Vila says 2–4 hours for a new install, HomeGuide says 8–10. We are not going to average two numbers that far apart into a third one that nobody measured. Ask for hours on the quote.
Does Home Depot Install Sump Pumps?
No. Neither does Lowe's. And every page currently quoting you a price for it is making the number up.
This is checkable, so we checked it against the retailers' own published service lists rather than their marketing pages:

Home Depot's complete US plumbing set is faucet replacement, garbage disposal installation, sink installation, toilet installation and repair, plumbing repair, water heater installation and repair, tankless and heat-pump water heaters, and water treatment. No sump pump. No drain. No sewer.
Lowe's is the same. Their landing-page sitemap carries 317 pages, 83 of them installation services. Plumbing installs are water heater, water softener, water treatment, toilet, sink and faucet, and garbage disposal. Zero sump pump.
So why does everyone search for it? Because Home Depot's internal service taxonomy does contain "Sump Pump Installation" — as one of 399 generic stubs with no page, no price and no provider attached, against 131 real Home Depot services and 78 real Pro Referral ones. The label is indexed; the service behind it does not exist. People search for something the taxonomy implies is purchasable.
That is also why the "$500–$1,200 Home Depot sump pump installation" figure repeated across the web has no source. It is a price for a product nobody sells.
One genuine exception, and it is easy to trip over: Home Depot Canada does offer this. There is a real sump pump installation and replacement page on homedepot.ca, connecting you to local pros. It is quote-only with no published pricing, and it has no equivalent on the US site. If you landed on a Canadian page, that is why.
What Home Depot actually sells you is the pump:

Prices vary by store. The realistic route is to buy the unit wherever it is cheapest and hire the labour separately — which is what the trade itself assumes. Angi's own guidance is blunt: *"Most sump pump installers are professional plumbing contractors."* None of the major cost publishers mention either retailer as an installer.
If you plan to break the slab yourself, Home Depot does rent the tools: a Hilti breaker runs about $85 for four hours or $121 a day, and a smaller demolition hammer around $38 for four hours. Weigh that against the $2,500–$5,000 a professional slab install costs — and against the fact that most manufacturers void the warranty on a pump you install yourself.
Sewage Ejector Pump — A Different Machine Entirely
These two get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive, because an ejector costs roughly three times a sump pump.

If you have a toilet, shower or laundry below the sewer line, that is an ejector. If water seeps into a pit in the floor, that is a sump.
Code sets the basin at a minimum 18 inches across and 24 inches deep, with a check valve and a full-open valve on the discharge, both accessible. The inspection has to happen before the basin is covered — book it, or you will be uncovering it.
Ejector units by material: plastic $150–$500, plastic and cast iron $180–$700, stainless $200–$850, cast iron $200–$2,000. Lifespan is 7–10 years, longer with regular inspection, and running cost is $30–$60 a month.
A grinder pump is the third type — it macerates solids before pumping, $1,000–$3,500 for the unit. Where a full ejector pit is impractical, an upflush or macerating toilet discharges through a one-inch pipe and skips the excavation entirely: the fixture costs more, the labour costs far less.
Crawl Space Installs — Why Quotes Swing Both Ways
Some sources say a crawl space is cheaper than a basement, others say dearer. Both are right, and which applies to you comes down to one measurement.
- Dirt floor with workable clearance → cheaper. Roughly $650–$1,500. There is no slab to cut, and cutting the slab is the largest single cost on a basement install. Digging a pit in soft dirt runs $300–$500.
- Low clearance → more expensive. Roughly $1,500–$4,000. Under about 18–24 inches a crew cannot get equipment in and digs by hand, and that labour can exceed what breaking concrete would have cost.
So the question to settle before accepting any crawl space quote is simply how much headroom there is where the pit is going. Measure it yourself before the estimator arrives.
An interior French drain follows the same logic — $2,000–$8,000 in a crawl space at $20–$40 per linear foot, against $4,000–$17,000 in a basement.
Insurance Will Not Pay for This — All Three Times
Homeowners usually discover this after the basement is already wet, so it is worth being precise.
Standard homeowners insurance does not cover it. Sump discharge and overflow is a named exclusion in the standard policy form, not a grey area, and it applies whether the water came from your plumbing or the municipal main. Failure of the pump itself is separately excluded as wear and tear.
The water backup rider covers the damage but not the pump. The endorsement pays for water damage from a backup or sump overflow, explicitly including failure "due to mechanical breakdown or power failure". It does not buy you a new pump. Limits are typically $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000.
On what that rider costs, the sources conflict badly and we are not going to pick one for you. The figure repeated across the industry is $50–$250 a year. But NerdWallet actually ran quotes on four houses in four states in 2026 and got $7–$17 a year. They are the only source we found that shopped it rather than repeating the number. Get your own quote — the spread is an order of magnitude.
Flood insurance does not cover it either. NFIP defines a flood as inundation of two or more acres, or two or more properties. A burned-out motor, a stuck float, a clogged discharge or a power cut is none of those. FEMA is explicit that a sewer backup is covered only when it is a direct result of flooding.
Where each one lands:

That last row is the one to notice. Groundwater seepage falls through all three products. It is the most common way a basement gets wet and the least insurable.
If you want the pump itself covered, that is equipment breakdown coverage — a separate endorsement again.
One timing note: NFIP's authorisation currently runs to 30 September 2026. It lapsed for 43 days in late 2025 during the federal shutdown, and no new or renewal policies could be written in that window. If you are buying flood cover, do not leave it to the deadline.
Permits and Electrical — What Actually Triggers One
A like-for-like pump swap in an existing pit usually needs no permit. What triggers one is new excavation, new discharge piping into the drainage system, or new electrical.
Verified municipal fees, so you can see the real spread rather than an averaged guess:

A sewage ejector permit is required virtually everywhere, because it alters the sanitary drainage system — a public health matter rather than a drainage one. The five-fold fee difference in Sweetwater reflects exactly that.
On electrical, two things are commonly claimed and only one is true:
- GFCI protection is required. Since the 2020 NEC, article 210.8(A)(5) covers all basements, finished and unfinished — the earlier "unfinished only" limit was removed. There is no sump pump exception. Because a GFCI nuisance trip silently disables the pump, a GFCI breaker at the panel is more reliable than a receptacle sitting beside a damp pit.
- A dedicated circuit is not an NEC requirement. It is widely asserted as code, and we could not find an article that says so. It is genuinely good practice, is often required by local amendment or by the pump manufacturer's own instructions, and costs $570–$1,000 — but if someone cites an NEC article number for it, ask which one.
One rule to check before the discharge pipe goes in: piping a sump pump into the sanitary sewer is prohibited in most US jurisdictions, because it overloads treatment plants. Cities run inspection programmes and levy fines or monthly surcharges — Darien, Connecticut passed an ordinance carrying $250 fines. It can be legal in one town and illegal in the next, so confirm locally first.
How Long It Lasts and When to Replace
Two framings, both well sourced, answering different questions.
- By type: pedestal pumps run 10–30 years, submersibles 5–20. The motor sitting out of the water is the reason.
- In practice: most sources put the working average at 7–10 years, and advise replacing anything past ten whether or not it still runs.
The honest planning number is ten years. If yours is older and the basement is finished, replacing it on your own schedule costs $350–$1,000; replacing it after it fails costs that plus the drying, and as the section above sets out, insurance will not be helping.
Test it the cheap way twice a year: pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm the pump starts, clears it, and shuts off cleanly. Most failures announce themselves at that test long before a storm finds them.
