Water Under the Washer Rarely Starts at the Bottom

A puddle under the machine means water exited at the lowest point — not that the lowest part failed. On front-loaders, four parts above the floor cause almost every bottom leak:

1. 1Drain pump — cracked housing or a failed shaft seal, leaks during the drain phase
2. 2Pump filter cap — left a quarter-turn loose after cleaning (the most common "mystery leak")
3. 3Tub-to-pump hose — the internal clamp loosens after years of spin vibration
4. 4Door boot gasket — pinhole tears send water down inside the cabinet, appearing underneath

Top-loaders simplify the list: pump, tub hose, or the tub seal around the transmission shaft.

Brand Notes: LG, Samsung, Whirlpool

LG front-loaders leak most often at the drain pump filter behind the lower-front access door. After any filter cleaning, the cap must thread fully tight — snug isn't enough. Second suspect: the pump itself, one panel deeper.

Samsung front-loaders earn their bottom leaks two ways: door boot tears (run a finger around the gray fold and look for grit trapped in it) and the drain hose connection working loose at the back. Samsung top-loaders more often loosen the tub-to-pump hose clamp.

Whirlpool and Maytag units — top-load especially — point to the tub-to-pump hose and the pump seal. The pump is usually accessible from the rear panel with the unit unplugged and the water shut off.

The Cardboard Test

Dry the floor completely and slide flattened cardboard under the machine. Run a small rinse-and-spin load and watch the lower front during the drain phase with a flashlight. Fresh drips land on the cardboard exactly below their source — it turns a guessing game into a map.

The Part Costs Less Than the Floor

Laundry rooms are usually vinyl or laminate over a wood subfloor, and repeated small leaks wick underneath where nothing evaporates. That's how a slow pump-seal drip becomes cupped boards, delaminated laminate, and a musty smell that outlasts the repair. Press the flooring around the machine's footprint: softness, staining, or lifting edges mean moisture got below — and that layer needs forced drying, not time.

Fix the machine and ignore the floor, and the floor keeps the mold. If the leak ran for weeks, treat it as two jobs: an appliance repair and a structural dry-out.
