“The Dunlop Chesapeake is what the crew wears on every Category 3 job. The unlined interior is a feature, not a limitation: after working in sewage, you spray bleach solution inside the boot and let it drain, then wipe down. You cannot do that with a fabric-lined boot. At $28, these are cheap enough that if they take a heavy sewage exposure, you throw them away. For something that may contact Hepatitis A and E. coli contaminated water, disposability matters.”

“The LaCrosse 4XBURLY is the boot I personally wear. Natural rubber has better inherent chemical resistance than PVC and the neoprene insulation means I can work in cold crawl spaces and flooded basements without my feet going numb. The 18-inch height fits over Tyvek coverall legs — important so the boot seals against the suit. At $89, this is a professional investment rather than a single-job purchase.”

“Tingley overshoes are in the back of every contractor's truck for a reason — they're the 'forgot my boots' solution that's better than nothing. For a homeowner going into a basement with 2 inches of clean water to assess the situation, these work. For active Category 3 sewage cleanup, get the Dunlop Chesapeake. Height matters: 6 inches of protection fails the moment you step into water deeper than 6 inches.”

What to know before you buy — written from real restoration job experience.
For Category 3 sewage work, the boot must be: (1) 100% waterproof — no fabric uppers, no stitched seams that allow water wicking; (2) Chemical-resistant — PVC and natural rubber both resist dilute sewage and disinfectant solutions; (3) Cleanable — unlined or easily-rinsed interior so you can decontaminate after each use; (4) Tall enough — minimum 12 inches for most residential sewage backup scenarios, 16–18 inches for significant flooding. Steel toes are optional but useful for demolition work in a damaged space.
After any Category 3 work: (1) Rinse boots with clean water outside before entering the clean zone. (2) For PVC/rubber boots, spray interior with a 1,000 ppm bleach solution (4 tablespoons bleach per gallon water). (3) Allow bleach solution to contact all interior surfaces for 10 minutes. (4) Rinse thoroughly with clean water. (5) Air-dry upside down. (6) For boots that took heavy contamination (immersed in sewage), consider disposal — pathogens can penetrate micro-cracks in the material.
