Vapor barrier thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Building code minimum is often 6 mil, but IICRC and moisture control professionals recommend 10–20 mil for durability. 6-mil poly punctures easily during installation — any sharp rock, nail, or crawl space debris tears through it. 20-mil reinforced barrier costs more but installs once correctly and lasts 15–25 years without re-installation.
Perms measure how much water vapor passes through the material per hour. Lower perms = less moisture transmission. Standard 6-mil poly: 0.06 perms. 20-mil reinforced: 0.01 perms. This 6x difference means the 20-mil barrier lets through 6x less moisture from the ground — a meaningful difference in humid climates. Look for barriers rated below 0.02 perms for serious moisture control.
Vapor barrier effectiveness depends entirely on seam integrity. IICRC S500 requires 12-inch overlaps at all seams, sealed with vapor barrier tape (not duct tape, which fails in humid conditions). Run the barrier 6 inches up foundation walls and seal with compatible tape or hydraulic cement. Any unsealed gap — around pipes, posts, or wall transitions — defeats the purpose of the barrier. Most DIY vapor barriers fail at the seams, not the material.
