For flood cleanup, you typically need both: a utility pump removes bulk standing water (2 inches and up) in minutes, then the sump pump and dehumidifiers handle residual moisture. Never rely on a utility pump as a long-term drainage solution.
The minimum depth specification tells you how low the pump can pull water. A pump rated for 2-inch minimum depth leaves 2 inches of standing water — you then need a wet/dry vac or mop for the rest.
