Most residential basements need 1/3 to 1/2 HP. Calculate your required GPH: a 1,000 sq ft basement during a 2-inch/hour storm receives about 1,250 gallons per hour — your pump must move water out faster than it enters. A 1/3 HP pump typically moves 2,000–3,000 GPH; a 1/2 HP moves 3,000–4,000 GPH. For basements with heavy clay soil or frequent flooding, go 1/2 HP or higher.
Vertical float switches activate based on water level and are more reliable in narrow sump pits — they cannot tangle. Tethered float switches swing wide as water rises and are better for large pits but can snag on the pit walls. For most residential sump pits (18–24 inches diameter), a vertical float switch is the correct choice.
Cast iron (Zoeller) conducts heat away from the motor most effectively and is the most durable for continuous cycling — it is what professional plumbers specify. Stainless steel (Wayne) resists corrosion better than uncoated cast iron in acidic groundwater. Thermoplastic (Superior) is lighter and cheaper but less durable under heavy use.
