The Readings

Where to Scan

Work in a grid and write the numbers on painter's tape. The spots that grow hidden mold:

  • Low on exterior walls and inside closets on them — condensation and the cold-wall problem
  • Around and below every window
  • Under sinks, the cabinet floor, and the wall behind the dishwasher and the washing machine
  • The base of the shower and tub surround, the wall behind the toilet, and the ceiling below a bathroom — the leak inside the wall
  • Below any ceiling stain, and the attic side of it
  • Basement walls at the floor line, and the floor around the water heater and the sump
  • Walls adjoining a bathroom or kitchen, from the other room

What to Do With a High Reading

  1. 1Find the water. A high reading is a leak, condensation or seepage to trace, not a mold to spray.
