Short-Term Results Mislead More Than People Expect
Short-term tests run 2–7 days and are what transactions use, because a result is needed quickly. The weakness is real and worth planning around: radon fluctuates enormously with barometric pressure, wind, rainfall, snow cover, frozen ground, and whether anyone left a window open.
A single short-term test can be well off your true annual average — in either direction. A house that reads 5.8 pCi/L in a February cold snap might average 3.1 across the year. One that reads 2.9 in a breezy October might average 4.6.
The sensible sequence:
