The Honest Answer: Some Mold, Some Surfaces

Vinegar has a reputation online as the natural mold killer that works on everything. The reality is narrower and more useful. Household white vinegar — about 5% acetic acid — kills many common indoor molds on hard, non-porous surfaces, and for that job it is a fair choice: cheap, no toxic fumes, safe around most finishes. What the Testing Actually Found

Vinegar inhibited *Penicillium chrysogenum* but had no measurable effect on *Aspergillus fumigatus* — a species common in damp buildings and a genuine health concern for people with weakened immune systems. That single result is the whole story of vinegar: it is a real antifungal for some organisms and not for others, and you cannot tell which species you have by looking.

So vinegar is best understood as a cleaner that also kills a good share of what it touches, not as a guaranteed treatment. That is still useful, because on hard surfaces the physical act of scrubbing and drying removes most of the colony regardless.

What Vinegar Cannot Do

It does not reach into porous materials. Drywall, wood, carpet, and ceiling tile absorb the vinegar's water while the hyphae below the surface carry on. This is the same reason bleach fails on those materials, and it is why EPA's guidance for moldy porous materials is removal, not treatment. It does not scale. EPA's threshold for professional remediation is about 10 square feet of growth. Beyond that — or anywhere mold is in HVAC, or growing from a hidden source inside a wall — the job is containment, HEPA filtration, and material removal, which is what remediation companies actually do. A spray bottle is the wrong scale.

It does not mix. Vinegar with bleach releases chlorine gas; vinegar with hydrogen peroxide forms peracetic acid, which is corrosive. One product at a time, rinsed between.

Vinegar vs. the Alternatives

EPA's own recommendation for hard surfaces is the least glamorous one: detergent and water, scrubbed and dried. It works because removal is mechanical. Vinegar adds a mild antifungal effect at no cost in fumes or finish damage, which makes it a sensible default for bathrooms and kitchens. Hydrogen peroxide (3%) is a broader-spectrum option on the same surfaces. Bleach whitens stains impressively and, per EPA, is not recommended as a routine mold cleanup practice.
