Quick answer
It depends on how deep it went. Light surface mildew on carpet fibres — from a humid room, a damp basement, or a spill dried slowly — can be HEPA-vacuumed, cleaned with a carpet-safe antifungal or diluted vinegar, extracted and dried fast. Mold that has reached the carpet backing and the pad underneath — the usual result of a leak, a flood, or carpet that stayed wet more than about 48 hours — is not cleanable: EPA guidance is that moldy porous materials like carpet may need to be discarded, and the pad always goes. Pull back a corner: staining or growth on the backing, a musty smell that rises when you lift it, or a pad that is discoloured means removal, drying of the subfloor, and new carpet over a dry floor. Wall-to-wall carpet in a basement that has flooded is replaced, not saved.
Three Layers, and the Answer Is in the Bottom Two
Carpet is three things stacked: the fibres you walk on, the woven backing they are tufted into, and the foam or fibre pad underneath. Mold on the fibres — a light mildew from a humid room — is a cleaning problem. Mold in the backing and pad is a removal problem, because those layers are porous, hold water for weeks, and cannot be cleaned in place. EPA's guidance on porous materials — that moldy carpet may need to be discarded — is about those layers.
So the first job is not cleaning. It is finding out how deep the mold went.
The Tests
- Pull back a corner. With pliers at a wall, lift the carpet off the tack strip and look at the backing and the pad. Clean and dry: surface case. Stained, fuzzy, dark, or a pad that has changed colour: it is in the layers.
- The lift-and-sniff. A musty smell that rises when the carpet is lifted is growth underneath, even if the top looks fine — what that smell means.
- The history. Carpet that was wet for more than about 48 hours — a flooded basement over a weekend, a leak found late, a water heater that let go — has grown mold in the pad whatever the surface says. The 48-hour timeline is the rule.
- The water type. Carpet wet from sewage, a backup or floodwater is discarded regardless — contamination, not just mold.
The Surface Case: Cleaning Mildew Off Carpet
Light mildew on fibres, backing and pad clean and dry, room humid rather than flooded:
- 1Close off the room and wear an N95; vacuuming mold releases spores.
- 2HEPA-vacuum slowly, in two directions.
- 3Treat with diluted white vinegar (1:1 with water) or a carpet-safe antifungal — vinegar's limits apply, but fibres are a surface — worked in with a brush, left ten minutes.
- 4Blot and extract with a wet-dry vacuum; do not flood the carpet.
- 5Dry within a day — fans across the surface, a dehumidifier in the room, the drying method. Damp carpet after cleaning is how the cleaning causes the next colony.
- 6Fix the humidity — under 50% — or it returns.
Steam cleaning moldy carpet without powerful extraction and drying afterwards adds water to a colony. Bleach on carpet discolours it and, as on any porous material, does not reach the growth.

The Removal Case
Mold in the backing or pad, or carpet wet more than two days:
- 1Contain — plastic over the doorway, HVAC registers covered, a fan exhausting out a window; N95, gloves, goggles.
- 2Cut the carpet into strips, roll each with the moldy side in, and bag them in the room. The pad comes up the same way; it is never reused.
- 3The subfloor. This is the point of the exercise. Wood subfloor: HEPA-vacuum, scrub with detergent, dry to a normal moisture-meter reading (typically under 16%), treat if stained; soft or delaminated OSB is replaced. Concrete: scrub, dry, and check for the seepage that wet it. The carpet, pad and subfloor decision covers the water-damage version of this in detail.
- 4New carpet only over a dry, fixed floor. A basement that floods is a basement that gets hard flooring or tile, not new wall-to-wall.
Above about 10 square feet of visible growth, or where the subfloor is involved, this is the kind of job remediation contractors do with containment and negative air; who to call explains how to keep the assessment independent of the removal.
Health, Briefly
Carpet mold is a floor-level exposure released by every footstep, and children on the floor get the most of it. For a household with asthma or mold allergy, moldy carpet in a bedroom is a reason to act quickly rather than clean and hope.
Bottom Line
Pull back a corner. Clean backing and pad with light mildew on top: vacuum, treat, extract, dry fast, fix the humidity. Anything in the backing or pad, anything wet more than two days, anything from dirty water: carpet and pad out, subfloor dried and checked, new flooring over a dry floor. Carpet is the one surface where "clean it" is usually the wrong answer.
